The Dreams of the Last Drum

“Dreams of the Last Drum” narrates a collective dream to repair the territories damaged by modernity. The film follows the walk of a spirit of ancestral resistance that moves through different planes of space-time. It takes place in a Patagonian forest, a spiritual landscape where there is no beginning or end, only a multispecies walk for life. We can see how the boundaries between dream and reality blur, creating a threshold, where states overlap. We witness the energetic attempts of a group of girls to connect with the hidden messages of the earth, of a dying ecosystem trying to regenerate itself. Communication takes place through electric hyphae, vibratory waves, generative sounds and ancestral chants that arrive through dreams (pewmas) to help them balance the world, to decompose the contaminated systems left behind by modernity, while they welcome new forms of life. When their physical bodies rest, their “pvji / pvllv” (spirits) begin to walk.

Van Der Kritz | AR

Van der Kritz is an art collective based in Buenos Aires, Argentina, formed by Alejandra Van der Land & Matías Kritz. Through speculative end-of-the-world fiction, which they call “situated energy fiction” (Sit-En-FI), they develop visual and sound practices to investigate contaminated and relational ecologies. They use the scientific and extractivist universes of modernity as contexts in which to sow local ancestral knowledge. They create an energetic language where there is no beginning or end, nor up or down, only a multispecies spiral for life in which multiple worlds coexist. It can be seen how the boundaries between nature and technology, between dream and reality, between life and death, become blurred, creating a threshold where states overlap.
